It is important, therefore, that you learn and follow the techniques for safe pesticide use.
1) Buying pesticides
Before you buy pesticides, you have to answer the questions below :
- Are sufficient predators already in the field or are they likely to be there soon?
- What are the suggested pesticides for the pest problem?
- How much damage has the pesticide done?
- Which pest is to be controlled?
- Which is the least toxic and least persistent among the recommended pesticides?
Buy pesticides from a reputable and good licensed store. 2) Pesticides
a) Do not buy in bulk, buy only as much as you predict to use within a short period.
b) Do not buy if the container is rusted, torn, leaking, or if the date of use has expired
c) Buy only pesticides in their original package with proper labelling.
d) Buy only pesticides with the PCPB mark. This shows that the pesticide conforms to the standards laid down by the Pest control Produce Board.
e) Do not buy banned restricted, or highly toxic pesticides. Note : Use pest only as a last resort and as part of an integrated pest management strategy. (IPMS)
3)Transportation
a) Avoid carrying bulk pesticides on public transport.
b) Do not transport pesticides together with food products, fodder, or other commodities.
c) Make sure that pesticides are adequately packaged and do not spill or leak out.
d) If the pesticide spills or leaks, cleaning the vehicle that has been used for transporting the pesticides.
4) Storage
a) Do not keep pesticides in the kitchen or living room. Keep them away from animal feed, food and fodder, and containers of potable water.
b) Keep pesticides locked away and make sure that they are out of reach of children and pets.
c) Preferably, store pesticides in a isolate room which is well-ventilated and is away from sunlight, fire, and water.
d) Be careful of cross contamination. Store herbicides separately from other kinds or pest.
e) Do not keep medicines for humans and livestock together with pesticides.
f) Reseal containers after partial use.
5)Waiting period
a) Pesticides with residual ability leave residues on the applied site and items.
b) Observe the waiting period specified on the label or recommended by your extension worker.
The waiting period depends on the type of pest, the pesticide used, and the dosage.
